:Chennai Andaman & Nicobar Submarine Optical fiber Cable:
- PM Narendra Modi to inaugurate 2300-km undersea cable project to boost connectivity to Andaman & Nicobar Islands on August 10,2020.
- This is the much-awaited ₹1,224-crore Chennai-Andaman & Nicobar undersea Internet cable,the submarine Optical Fibre Cable (OFC), was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on last Monday.
- The PM of India will launch and dedicate to the nation the project which will boost connectivity to Andaman & Nicobar through video conferencing.Please find picture 1, show overall map indicating routing from Chennai to Andaman-

- The submarine Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) will also connect Port Blair to Swaraj Dweep (Havelock),Little Andaman,Car Nicobar,Kamorta, Great Nicobar, Long Island and Rangat.

Salient Points:
- The Andaman and Nicobar Islands,a Union territory of India comprising 572 islands of which 37 are inhabited.
- The territory’s capital city name is "Port Blair".
- Cable system will have 400 Gigabit per second.Once inaugurated,the submarine OFC (Optical Fibre cable) link will deliver bandwidth of 2 x 200 Gigabits per second (Gbps) between Chennai and Port Blair and 2 x 100 Gbps between Port Blair and the other islands.
- The eight islands to be connected with Chennai,include port blair,little Andaman,Kamota,Great Nicobar,Havlock,Long & Rangat islands.
- The Prime Minister had laid the foundation stone of this project on December 30, 2018, at Port Blair.
- Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) executed this project while Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL) is the Technical Consultants under department of telecommunications of India.

- Indian government also plan to develop transshipment port at great Nicobar island at approx cost around 10000 cr. rupees. Obviously it will generate revenue in future for Indian Government.

- Fiber optic cables have transformed telecommunications and connectivity.A fiber-optic cable is designed to protect the inside fiber core that carries the transmission of a light signal.Please find below picture 7 for indicate detail construction of OFC.

Universal Service Obligation Fund:
- Now you think from where does money will come from? This project cost funding generated from universal service levy (USL).
- Funds come from the Universal Service Levy (USL) of 5% charged from all the telecom operators like Vodafone,Airtel,Jio on their Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) which are then deposited into the Consolidated Fund of India.
